Innovating the Future of Photonics

EDWATEC is a Swiss high-tech startup pioneering Erbium-doped photonic integrated circuits for on-chip optical amplification. Established in 2023 as a spin-off from the Laboratory of Photonics and Quantum Measurements (LPQM), and co-founded by Dr. Amir Youssefi and Prof. Tobias Kippenberg. EDWATEC operates as an integrated device manufacturer (IDM), focusing on transferring its technology for large-volume industry applications. The company is headquartered at EPFL Innovation Park, benefiting from direct access to EPFL’s advanced R&D and nanofabrication facilities at the Center of MicroNanoTechnology (CMi).

EDWATEC develops on-chip optical amplification using advanced erbium ion implantation into industry-grade silicon nitride waveguides (EDWAs). The process enables precise doping control and broadband gain across the C+L bands, fully compatible with silicon photonics foundry platforms. These amplifiers can be monolithically or hybridly integrated, offering scalable embedded gain for applications in optical transceivers, data- and tele-communications, fiber sensing, satellite communications, and beyond.
